Reading

At Treloweth School, reading lies at the heart of our commitment to developing pupils who are Curious, Kind and Connected. Through a rich and ambitious reading curriculum, we nurture a love of books, stories and language while ensuring every child develops the skills needed to become a successful reader.

Children begin their reading journey in the Early Years through the high-quality Read Write Inc. phonics programme, where they develop the essential foundations of decoding, word recognition and early reading. Through systematic, daily teaching, pupils build the knowledge and confidence needed to become fluent readers. Once they have successfully completed the programme, children progress to Little Wandle Fluency, which supports them in developing greater accuracy, expression, fluency and comprehension. As their confidence grows, pupils access a carefully selected range of high-quality texts matched to their age and stage of development. These texts broaden vocabulary, deepen understanding and inspire children to explore new ideas, knowledge and perspectives.

Reading also helps children develop an appreciation of the experiences, beliefs and backgrounds of others. Through carefully chosen texts and high-quality discussion, pupils encounter a diverse range of characters, cultures and viewpoints. Literature provides opportunities to explore emotions, relationships and values, helping children to develop empathy, respect and compassion both within school and beyond.

As pupils progress through the school, reading becomes a powerful means of making sense of the world around them. It is woven throughout the curriculum, enabling children to make meaningful links between subjects and deepen their understanding of local, national and global communities. Pupils are encouraged to share recommendations, discuss texts and celebrate reading together, fostering a rich reading culture that extends beyond the classroom and into family and community life.

At Treloweth, we believe reading is the foundation of learning and a vital life skill. Through high-quality phonics teaching, a carefully sequenced reading journey and access to a rich range of literature, we equip every child with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a lifelong reader.
